A jellyfish sting is a biochemical reaction caused by the injection of venom from microscopic stinging cells, known as nematocysts, located on the jellyfish’s tentacles. The severity of a sting is influenced by the jellyfish species, the extent of skin contact, and the individual’s health and sensitivity. Symptoms range from localized reactions, such as immediate and severe pain, redness, swelling, and itching, to rare but life-threatening systemic reactions like respiratory distress and anaphylaxis. Effective first aid is critical and involves immediate removal from the water, careful removal of any remaining tentacles using gloves, rinsing the affected area exclusively with saltwater, and applying heat (45-50°C) to neutralize the venom. Actions to be strictly avoided include rinsing with fresh water, rubbing the area, or applying unproven remedies like ammonia or urine, as these can trigger further venom release and worsen the injury. While most stings can be managed with first aid and symptomatic treatment, immediate professional medical attention is imperative if systemic symptoms appear, a large area of the body is affected, or the victim is a child or elderly individual.
