Immediate and correct first aid—specifically, washing the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 5-10 minutes—is critical for mechanically removing contaminants and significantly reducing the risk of infection. Following first aid, all dog bites necessitate professional medical evaluation. Medical intervention includes wound assessment, administration of a tetanus booster if required, and often a course of antibiotics, particularly for deep wounds or bites in high-risk areas like the hands and feet.
The most critical threat is rabies, a viral disease affecting the central nervous system that is fatal if left untreated. The risk is highest with bites from stray, unvaccinated, or unknown animals. Management of potential rabies exposure is an emergency that requires immediate Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), a treatment regimen involving Rabies Immune Globulin (RIG) for immediate passive immunity and a multi-dose series of the rabies vaccine for long-term active immunity. Prevention, through responsible pet ownership, public education on dog behavior, and appropriate defensive actions, is the most effective strategy to mitigate the incidence of dog bites.
