5. Recognizing and Responding to an Allergic Reaction
It is critical to immediately recognize the signs of an allergic reaction, which can occur during the infusion or shortly after. Reactions can range from mild to severe, and prompt action is essential.
Common signs of an allergic reaction include:
- Skin Symptoms: Itching, rash, hives (urticaria), redness, or swelling.
- Respiratory Symptoms: Sneezing, runny nose, difficulty breathing, wheezing, or a feeling of swelling in the throat.
- Digestive Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or diarrhea.
- Circulatory Symptoms: A sudden drop in blood pressure, dizziness, feeling faint, or a rapid heartbeat.
Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that combines several of the above symptoms. It is a medical emergency that requires immediate intervention.
If you experience any of these symptoms, you must immediately alert the healthcare professional administering the treatment.
