4.0 Immediate First Aid Protocol: Recommended Actions
Applying correct and timely first aid is vital to deactivating remaining stinging cells, alleviating pain, and preventing further complications. Adherence to this evidence-based protocol is designed to significantly reduce the severity of the injury and promote a faster recovery.
- Ensure Safety and Remove Tentacles: The first priority is to move the affected person out of the water to a safe location. Carefully inspect the skin and remove any remaining tentacle fragments. Crucially, this must be done using gloves or another barrier. Using bare hands will result in the rescuer also being stung.
- Rinse with Salt Water: Thoroughly rinse the affected area with large amounts of seawater or saline solution. This helps wash away remaining nematocysts without triggering them.
- Apply Heat to Neutralize Venom: Immerse the affected area in hot water (approximately 45-50°C or 113-122°F) or apply a hot compress. The heat helps to break down the protein structure of the venom, which can significantly reduce pain and inflammation.
- Use a Bicarbonate Paste: Applying a paste made from sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and seawater may help neutralize any remaining, undischarged stinging cells on the skin.
- Manage Pain and Itching: Topical pain-relieving creams or oral antihistamines may be used to manage persistent pain and itching. However, these should only be administered following the recommendation of a medical professional.
Knowing what to do is critical, but it is equally important to know what actions to avoid.
