4.0 Critical Actions to AVOID
Incorrect actions can be as dangerous as the sting itself. Common myths and instinctual reactions can actively worsen the injury by triggering mass venom release from nematocysts remaining on the skin. Adhere strictly to the following prohibitions.
- DO NOT Use Fresh Water This is a direct violation of the Golden Rule. Rinsing with fresh water creates an osmotic imbalance across the nematocyst membrane, which is the primary trigger for mass discharge. You will turn a localized sting into a systemic envenomation.
- DO NOT Use Ammonia or Urine These substances are scientifically unproven and dangerous. They do not neutralize venom and can increase the risk of secondary infection.
- DO NOT Rub, Scrape, or Vigorously Dry the Area Applying physical pressure or friction will mechanically trigger any undischarged nematocysts on the skin, causing further envenomation and intensifying pain.
- DO NOT Apply Ice or Excessive Cold Cold is less effective than heat for neutralizing protein-based toxins. Cold applications may even preserve the venom’s activity, prolonging the victim’s pain.
Knowing what not to do is half the battle. The other half is knowing when to escalate.
