3. First Aid: What to Do Immediately
Following the correct procedure can significantly reduce pain and prevent the sting from getting worse.
- Get the person out of the water and to a safe area on the shore.
- Carefully remove any visible tentacle parts. It is critical to use gloves or another barrier—never use your bare hands, as this will cause you to be stung as well.
- Rinse the area thoroughly with plenty of sea water. This helps wash away remaining stinging cells without triggering them.
- Apply heat to help neutralize the venom and reduce pain. If possible, soak the affected area in hot water (45-50°C or 113-122°F) or apply a hot compress for 20-40 minutes.
Following these steps is crucial, but it’s just as important to know what not to do.
