7.0 Prevention Strategies
Most dog bites can be prevented with appropriate measures taken by both dog owners and the general public.
- For Dog Owners:
- Socialization: Socialize puppies from a young age to acclimate them to different people, animals, and environments.
- Veterinary Care: Ensure regular vaccinations (especially for rabies), parasite control, and general health check-ups.
- Control: Always use a leash when walking a dog in public and maintain control in crowded areas.
- For the General Public:
- Recognize Warning Signs: Be aware of canine body language indicating stress or agitation, such as growling, tucking the tail between the legs, raising fur, or pulling ears back.
- Avoid High-Risk Situations: Do not approach dogs that are sleeping, eating, caring for puppies, or appear to be strays.
- Defensive Actions During an Attack:
- Remain Still: Avoid running. Stand motionless and hold arms in front of the body to protect the head and neck.
- Protective Position: If knocked to the ground, curl into a fetal position to protect the head and neck, and remain still.
