Nutrition is one of the most important factors to support growth and development in children. Adequate nutrition ensures reaching the physical potential determined by the genes inherited from the parents. It is very important at every age to make sure that you consume enough vitamins, minerals and nutrients (carbohydrate, protein, fat) that should be considered in nutrition. Children may need different amounts of nutrients at different ages. Nutrition suitable for the child for optimal health; determined by age, gender, mobility and other characteristics. However, we know that not every child eats the food that is put in front of them and tends to unhealthy options too much. In this case, nutritional habits, which have an important place in children’s nutrition, emerge. Read the rest of the article for details about children’s eating habits and preparing a children’s lunch box.

Nutrition in Children

The first basic need for every child is to live in healthy conditions, to be fed and to grow up in an environment where they can receive love. According to experts, children who have an adequate and balanced diet show more advanced cognitive and behavioral skills and learning potential. The amount consumed daily in children varies according to age. However, the rate of food group that should be consumed during the day does not change much. If you want to offer your child a healthy and balanced plate, this plate;

40-50% of vegetables and fruits,
Protein sources such as eggs, poultry, fish, legumes, soy products (20-25%),
25-30% whole grain products such as whole grain rice, oatmeal, pearl barley, whole grain pasta, bread, crusty breads,
5-10% should be made up of oils (seeds, nuts, unrefined oils).
In addition, daily milk and dairy products should be consumed. It is necessary to choose options without added sugar.
Children’s eating habits are first shaped by the family and then at school. For this reason, the subject of nutrition in children is divided into two parts as pre-school nutrition and nutrition in school children.

Nutrition in Preschool Children

Preschool nutrition is the period when children start to adopt an attitude towards food. For the children of this period, which is also called the playgroup, the events around them are always very striking, and it is often seen that they are distracted during the meal. They do not like to eat vegetables and mix foods. Picky eating is mostly seen during this period. In this difficult but temporary process, there are some duties that fall on the people responsible for the care of the child. We can briefly summarize them as follows:

Parents and caregivers, if any, should know that their food habits, likes and dislikes will be imitated by the child.
Children whose daily food amounts vary should not be expected to eat the same amount every day.
No food group should be given to a child as punishment or reward. When it is said, “You cannot eat chocolate without finishing the vegetables on your plate,” the vegetable on the plate becomes a punishment for the child, while the chocolate becomes a reward.
It is necessary to sit at the table with the child and eat at the same time every day. Even if there is a meal that the child does not want to consume, it is ensured that the child gets used to it by sitting at the table together.
The child should not be allowed to consume junk food close to meal times. In this way, the child is provided to consume the main meal hungry and willingly.
In this period when the growth rate is slow and motor development takes place rapidly, it should be aimed to plan the meal plan, develop eating behavior and gain life-long positive eating habits.

Nutrition in School Age Children

School-age children, who have consistent but slower growth than the other group, need healthy food and nutritious snacks. Snacking is common in this age group. They can consume 4-5 meals a day. Apart from the family, friends and technological devices (phone, television) can also affect the food choices and habits of this age group. In this period, the desire to try new foods can be seen more compared to the preschool period. Even though they have more advanced skills than pre-school children, school-age children are still in a learning process and some responsibilities fall on the caregivers in this period. These are as follows:

These children, whose skills are developing, can be involved in the selection and preparation of food. Children who have the opportunity to choose foods and amounts according to their nutritional values will learn to make healthy choices.
Calcium, magnesium, potassium and fiber deficiencies are common in children. Therefore, the consumption of foods with these nutrients can be increased.
Children often do not think of drinking water. To ensure dehydration, it should be reminded to consume fluids during and after each physical activity.
Spending half of the day at school means that their children have some of their meals at school. School meals should not be skipped over snacks. You can make sure that your child is eating healthy at school by preparing a kid’s lunch box with easy-to-consume and portable foods.
Since the child is in the growing period, body weight changes can be very high. However, it should be noted that this is within healthy limits and a hospital should be consulted when necessary.

Nutritional Habits in Children

Babies who need nutrition from the moment they are born begin a period in which they feed themselves, thanks to the transition to solid food and the dexterity that develops afterwards. During this period, children learn by observing nutrition, as in everything else. Nutritional habits in children start in the family. Children’s eating habits may change according to the society, environment and family environment. For this reason, the family should provide the child with healthy and correct nutrition education that he can continue throughout his life.

Nutritional habits in children are most affected by educational institutions after the first education received from the family. Adequate and balanced nutrition habits should be gained in schools, in addition to the nutritional knowledge, the foundation of which is laid in the family. Proper nutrition education and activities, especially in the pre-school period, increase the knowledge level of children about nutrition. In this way, diseases that may occur in childhood or adulthood are prevented. It is very important that children, who form the future of society, acquire healthy eating habits and form healthy individuals in the future. For this reason, healthy and balanced nutrition education given in schools is of great importance for the development of nutritional habits in children.

Kids Lunch Box

Giving children balanced and healthy eating habits can be a difficult process for parents. However, it should be noted that this process is temporary. While a healthy eating process can be easily provided at regular hours and at home in the pre-school period, most parents have difficulties when the child starts school. While the main meals in schools that provide a cafeteria system are healthy home meals, in schools that do not have a cafeteria, children may turn to unhealthy snacks in the school canteens. The most effective and easy way to prevent this is to prepare a children’s lunch box. Here are some of the things that parents who prepare a child lunch box should pay attention to:

Foods such as bread, rice, pasta and potatoes that keep you full for a longer time should be added. Whole wheat products should be preferred as much as possible.
Give your kids the opportunity to make their own sandwiches. This way, they are more likely to eat more willingly.
Vegetables such as fruits or cucumbers and carrots should be added to the meal. It is consumed more willingly as it makes it easier to eat fruits and vegetables by chopping them.
Younger children in particular may be attracted to the way the food looks, so you can make the kid’s lunchbox more interesting and add a note.
If you have just started preparing a lunch box for a child, putting your child’s favorite food will allow the child to consume more willingly and get used to the lunch box faster.
Nutrition, which has a very critical place in the health of children, actually begins during the pregnancy period of mothers. Afterwards, when the child gains the necessary skills and starts to eat on his own, the children’s eating habits are formed with the right guidance of the parents and the educators when they start school. However, in this process, it is very important for the parents to have sufficient knowledge about adequate and balanced nutrition and to lay the basics of nutrition correctly. In this period when information pollution about nutrition is very intense, it may be best to get support from a dietitian for both your child and your health.
